About
Greater Cleveland Aquarium is at 2000 Sycamore Street in the Nautica Waterfront District, inside the historic FirstEnergy Powerhouse, a National Historic Landmark designed by John N. Richardson in the Romanesque revival style. The building once generated electricity for streetcars and closed in 1920; the aquarium opened in the restored space in 2012. Seven galleries hold more than 1,400 animals representing 250 freshwater and saltwater species, with two touch pools, an 11,000-gallon stingray touch pool and a 175-foot shark seatube. It opens 10am to 5pm every day, with last entry at 4pm. It is a freestanding, independent aquarium, not affiliated with the zoo or the natural history museum, so every fact here comes from its own pages.

Sensory provision is the strongest part of its accessibility offer: it is certified sensory inclusive by KultureCity, it publishes a two-page Sensory Field Guide describing every gallery, it lends sensory bags, weighted lap pads and strobe glasses, it marks quiet areas, and it runs a Sensory Hour that opens an hour early with reduced microphone use. A limited number of wheelchairs can be borrowed each day if you call 216.862.8803 x7700 the morning of your visit, and there is a comfort room with two chairs, a privacy screen and an adult-size changing table. The important physical detail is buried where few visitors will find it. The public Accessibility page says only that the aquarium is completely wheelchair accessible. The group booking pages say what that actually means: the aquarium sits on the lower floor, a single wheelchair capacity lift runs from the lobby entrance down to it, and a group with five or more wheelchair users must arrange a larger elevator elsewhere in the building at the time of booking.

Features Information Available on Website Available at Venue Notes Additional Info / Things to Know Links
On Site Parking Garage or Lot
Yes
Yes
Propark Mobility operates a large, credit card-only parking lot directly in front of the Powerhouse. Take a ticket when you enter and pay on exit (usually $3-6 per car). There is also limited neighboring street parking available. The lot is run by a third party, Propark Mobility, and the aquarium publishes nothing about its accessible spaces. Limited street parking is also mentioned, and there is a Bike Box on the south side of Main Avenue at the roundabout.
Drop Off/Pick Up Lanes/ Ride Share
Yes
Yes
Uber and Lyft drivers may pull directly into the Powerhouse parking lot after taking a ticket at one of the two gates, and have 10 minutes before parking fees apply. Ride share drop-offs are otherwise likely to be at the corner of Elm and Washington, which is a few steps from the entrance. Buses can drop groups at the front door of the Powerhouse before parking in the rear.
Off site Parking
Yes
Yes
Limited neighbouring street parking is available near the Powerhouse. There's a free street-parking.
Accessible Entrance
Yes
Yes
The aquarium is wheelchair accessible and sits on the lower floor of the building. A single wheelchair capacity lift runs from the lobby entrance down to the aquarium. Groups with five or more guests using wheelchairs should say so at booking, because a larger capacity elevator is available in a different area of the building. Check in at the ticket counter in the Powerhouse lobby.
Site Map/Floorplan
Yes
No
There is no floor plan or site map. What the aquarium offers instead is an official 360 degree virtual tour, embedded on the Accessibility page and the What You Need To Know page under the heading Before You Arrive, and it recommends the tour for judging whether a twin stroller will fit through the hallways and galleries.

Dedicated Accessible Entrance
Yes
No
There is no separate accessible entrance. Everyone uses the same Powerhouse lobby entrance, and the wheelchair lift from that lobby down to the aquarium is the accessible route.
Street Level Access and Automatic Doors
Yes
No
The galleries are not on the lobby level. The aquarium is on the lower floor of the Powerhouse and a wheelchair lift connects the lobby entrance to it, so reaching the exhibits involves a change of level.
Security Checkpoint
Yes
No
There is no security checkpoint. Entry is by scanning the ticket barcode on your phone at the ticket counter.
Use of Mobility Aids
Yes
Yes
A limited number of wheelchairs can be borrowed each day. Call 216.862.8803 x7700 on the morning of your visit to reserve one; three chairs are available on a first-come, first-served basis. All strollers are permitted. Trained service dogs are welcome under the ADA, on a non-retractable lead and under the handler's control at all times. No fee, deposit or ID requirement is stated for the wheelchair loan, and no mobility scooter policy is published. Strollers are permitted but not rented. The aquarium warns that side-by-side or twin strollers have limited space in the hallways and certain galleries at busy times, and suggests a single stroller at weekends and special events. Pets, companion animals and emotional support or therapy animals are not permitted.

Restrooms
Yes
No
Restrooms are confirmed in the Ohio Lakes and Rivers Gallery and in the Coastal Boardwalk Gallery, both noted in the official Sensory Field Guide for their loud hand dryers. There is also a small comfort room for private changing or feeding, holding two chairs, a privacy screen and an adult-size changing table that doubles as a first aid bench.
Elevators
Yes
Yes
A single wheelchair capacity lift runs from the lobby entrance to the aquarium on the lower floor. A larger capacity elevator is available in a different area of the building, and groups with five or more guests using wheelchairs are asked to say so at booking so it can be arranged.
On-Site Dining
Yes
No
There is no cafe or restaurant on site. Snacks and candy are sold in the gift shop and in vending machines, and outdoor picnic tables are available first come, first served in the warmer months. The ticket counter keeps a list of nearby restaurants.
There are no onsite food options. There are outdoor tables available for picnics on a first-come, first-served basis. There are nearby options (Astoria Market & Cafe, The Harp, Great Lakes Brewing Company, Saucy Brew Works and others), a short drive away. We recommend searching for restaurants in the Ohio City, Tremont, Detroit-Shoreway, Gordon Square and Hingetown neighborhoods. Ask at our Ticket Counter for a list of neighboring eateries and attractions.
Theater, Auditorium, etc. (Museum)
Yes
No
There is no theater or auditorium. The aquarium states plainly that it does not have space to host band, choir or orchestra performances. Programming is roving instead: discovery carts, animal encounters, sharks and scuba talks and stingray feeds, each listed against a gallery rather than a room. Videos play inside several galleries, including ones about spotted turtles, archerfish, the building's history, bamboo sharks and scuba divers, but no seated viewing space is described for any of them. There is no mention of captioning or audio description for those videos, and none for the occasional microphone interpretive talks.
Our Guidelines
1. Make Accessibility Info Easy to Find - Dedicated Website Accessibility Page

Clearly post detailed accessibility information online, covering parking, entrances, interior pathways, site plans, and more.

2. Include All Mobility Devices

Consider walkers, canes, crutches — not just wheelchairs. Provide specifics for a variety of mobility needs. Include people who use different devices in the conversation.

3. Go Beyond ADA Compliance

ADA is the minimum. Strive for real-world accessibility through thoughtful design and ongoing improvements.

4. Visibility = Accessibility

If disabled visitors aren't present, barriers may exist. Transparency and preparation are the keys to inclusion. Empower everyone to attend.
